Silver was, especially in towns and cities, the poor relation of gold, although it began to be less stigmatized during the twentieth century, and was favoured for foot ornaments. By the beginning of the twentieth century most of the silver used was American in origin, refined in England, and came in the form of bricks through Bombay.
