The wearing of jewelry by both sexes was restrained and may properly by classified as costume accessory. In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries it was mainly confined to head-dress ornament, garment fastenings and belts. Indeed, the bold, large-scale patterns of the heavy silk brocades used for costume were sufficiently decorative. The tubans worn by both men and women were embellished with gold ornaments consisting of pointed sockets to hold feathers and plumes, stuck into the turbans and fastened by chains. The belts worn over robes were elegant slender bands or articulated buckles and plaques made of gold, silver, ivory and mother of pearl, offering scope for the msot refined jeweler’s art. Graceful designs of spiralling foliage interlaced with floral motifs were inlaid in gold or rubies and turquoises.
Almost two centuries of colonization could not change the Indian tradition of jewellery as daily wear. While its use an ornamentation may not be so routinely visible in urban India, it is still an essential part of the everyday attire of the rural Indian. Rajasthan, like so many other parts of India, has a rich living tradition of jewellery. It has its ornaments, motifs and designs, which are intrinsic to its people and are worn even today.
